Parrot Costs: From Budgies to Macaws

Purchase price, cage, food, avian vet, and the decades-long financial commitment — everything you need before choosing a bird.

Birds are among the most misunderstood pets when it comes to cost. A budgie might seem like a $30 pet — but the cage, avian vet, air purifier, toys, and food make the first year easily $400–$600. A macaw is a $3,000+ purchase that could outlive you, costing $400+ every single month for 50–60 years.

Cockatoos and macaws are not beginner birds. Their emotional, social, and financial needs are closer to caring for a toddler than a pet. Many end up in rescues from owners who underestimated the commitment. Research extensively before purchasing.

Cage & Setup Costs

Bar spacing is critical — too wide and your bird can get its head stuck or escape; too narrow and it can't grip properly. Never compromise on cage size; a bird that can't fully extend its wings in its cage is being kept in poor conditions.

Toy rotation is not optional for parrots. Parrots need mental stimulation equivalent to what a highly intelligent animal requires. Insufficient enrichment leads to feather destructive behavior, screaming, and aggression — and treating feather destruction can cost hundreds in vet visits and behavioral consultants.

Avian Vet Care

Not all vets treat birds. You need an avian-certified veterinarian or a vet with proven exotic bird experience. Find one before you bring a bird home — avian emergencies happen fast and birds hide illness until it's advanced.

The Lifetime Commitment

A cockatiel at $100 that lives 20 years at $65/month costs $15,700 over its lifetime. An African Grey at $2,000 that lives 50 years at $160/month costs $98,000+. A macaw can literally outlive its owner — estate planning for your bird is a real consideration.
